With the music business being such a difficult lifestyle, it is refreshing to see a young rising star pouring their everything into the art. Opening up to playing and performing as much as possible will lead to not only a growing talent but also a growing network of other musicians that can help a lifelong career take shape. Our recent find Sam Kuslan seems to be on the perfect path to live his dreams.
The New Orleans native is only approaching his late 20’s but has already made a name for himself as a talented multi dimensional artist. Sam Kuslan has toured all over the US and Europe. Sometimes as a featured artist with jazz-funk Naughty Professor, or as a sideman with Nashville Country/American-folk artist Sean McConnell, rock’n’roller David Shaw, or even as musical director and leader of the National Park Service Centennial Band.
This versatility has opened many doors as Sam Kuslan now steps out with his debut solo album, Runaway Love, a vibrant and infectious blend of musical styles. The nine-track record is a love letter to the Crescent City’s rich musical heritage, showcasing his impressive talent as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.
A Nostalgic Trip with Modern Flair:
Right from the opening title track, “Runaway Love,” Sam Kuslan lays his cards on the table. A piano-driven rocker with a touch of classic R&B. It’s a catchy track that evokes the spirit of some of his favorite artists like Jamie Cullum and Dr. John. The smooth vocals and playful piano work set the tone for an album that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.
Tracks like “(I Wanna Call Love An) Old Thing” lean into a country-tinged pop aesthetic, while the charming “My Completeness” showcases Kuslan’s sweet and soulful side. The emotions can be felt here with flashbacks to some of the most revered singers at their piano.
Beyond the Bayou:
While New Orleans is undeniably the heart and soul of Runaway Love, Sam Kuslan isn’t afraid to venture beyond the bayou. “Sunshine and Roses” injects a pop-rock energy with soul that wouldn’t feel out of place on a sunny California beach with some sunny guitars sprinkled in. The country tinged “Only You” lets the vocals soar with a hint of influences such as John Mayer.
The album closes with the energetic yet lush love ballad “Without Your Love.” Again feelings are on full display but paired with a full sound that makes it enjoyable for any mood. This smooth genre-hopping approach might be jarring for some, but it ultimately highlights the artist’s versatility and ability to create a cohesive listening experience.
Masterful Musicianship:
One of the album’s biggest strengths is Sam Kuslan’s undeniable talent as a multi-instrumentalist and singer. He effortlessly switches between piano, guitar, and high end vocals, creating a dynamic and textured soundscape. His tight rhythm section lays down a solid foundation, while the occasional horn blasts add that undeniable New Orleans flair.
Final Verdict:
Runaway Love is a debut album brimming with infectious energy and undeniable talent. Sam Kuslan’s versatile approach might raise an eyebrow at first, but it ultimately results in a delightful musical gumbo that’s impossible not to groove to. This record is a strong first step for an artist with a bright future ahead, offering a fresh take on classic sounds and establishing Kuslan as one to watch.
