After countless tours all over the world with various bands, rock operas, and circuses, electro-pop artist Aaron Berk is turning a new leaf and going solo.
Under the name Hopper Race, Berk recently released his first EP. Pop Priest is solely his own creation; Berk did the writing, production, mixing, and even filming for videos all on his own.
As a result, Pop Priest is uniquely and clearly Berk’s vision realized.
Hopper Race’s Video for ‘Racing Bullets’ Brings It All Together
Pop Priest comes out of the gate strong with “Racing Bullets,” a catchy and easily danceable song. The synth sounds and beats have an upbeat groove, and Berk’s vocals stand out. His range is wide, and his voice is strong.
Hopper Race also created an animated music video for the song, combining animation and live-action in a visually loud but artistically engaging product.
Assisted by his roommate and co-conspirator Ekurtis (Eric Larson) and largely filmed in their apartment, the “Racing Bullets” video is truly exemplary of who Aaron Berk truly is.
Berk’s interesting background is a clear musical and visual influence in his work, from stints with circuses in the Middle East to his time in high-drama glam rock band Smith Island Asylum. His music videos are highly creative and showy, and his music takes advantage of the far reaches of his talent.
Another highlight of Hopper Race’s Pop Priest EP is its title track.
“Pop Priest” highlights Berk’s vocal abilities. The verses are more mellow and quiet, effectively building to a peak at the statement of the chorus. A rock-influenced electric guitar comes in towards the end of the song, elevating the last iteration of the chorus to a sudden ending.
Something about Hopper Race is theatrical in a mysteriously intriguing way, bringing you back again and again. If Pop Priest is any indication, going solo was the perfect move for Aaron Berk.
The future is bright for Hopper Race.
